Humanity at Risk: Gary Marcus Highlights Urgent Need for AI Accountability and Ethical Governance

Gary Marcus is ringing the alarm bells on the state of artificial intelligence (AI). In a recent spiel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee, Marcus played the part of the disenchanted scientist, professing his love for AI while also expressing some very real concerns. Think of it as a love letter to AI sprinkled with an appropriate dose of existential dread. The highlights? AI might bring about some benefits, sure, but it could also destabilize our society in ways we're just starting to grapple with. And by grapple, I mean we're a toddler trying to wrestle a gorilla. Good luck to us.

AI systems, according to Marcus, have a potential to wreak havoc like never before. They're like an unfiltered social media influencer with a penchant for half-truths and scandalous rumors, capable of creating persuasive lies at an unprecedented scale. Democracy itself is under threat, with chatbots stealthily molding our opinions and those in charge of the data setting the rules. Talk about an unseen puppet master! Oh, and remember when chatbots were cute helpers that recommended pizza toppings? Yeah, not anymore. Now they might falsely accuse you of crimes or give you detrimental medical advice. It’s like if Siri had a midlife crisis and decided to go rogue.

But don't you worry, it gets more interesting. The rollout of AI products is faster than a cheetah on a sugar high, with OpenAI releasing GPT-4 and ChatGPT plugins within a month, creating possibilities for automated systems with unprecedented powers. Sounds exciting until you realize the potential for catastrophic misuse. Imagine counterfeit people created by criminals, or AI systems acting like bulls in a china shop - strong, reckless, and out of control. But hey, who doesn't enjoy a good dystopian future?

So, what's the solution? Well, Marcus isn't entirely sure, but he isn't putting much faith in the "trust us" approach of the big tech companies. The stakes are too high and the potential for mission drift is too real. Instead, he's championing the cause for independent scientists, urging them to work closely with governments and tech companies, evaluating the safety of these systems even before they're released. Think of it as a clinical trial for AI systems. Novel idea, isn’t it? Oh, and he's also hinting at something akin to a global, international, and neutral organization like CERN, but dedicated to AI safety. Because nothing says "we've got it under control" like a multi-billion dollar international cooperative.

The Real Robocop Arrives: OpenAI-backed EVE Stands Guard

Midjourney Prompt: A Robot Security Guard

Ladies and gents, start your engines because the humanoid robot race has a new frontrunner. No, it's not Elon Musk's Tesla (a bit of a shocker there, right?). An OpenAI-backed startup, 1X, has just jumped ahead of the pack with a humanoid robot that's actually, wait for it... functioning in the real world! While Tesla's been busy playing around with its robotic prototypes, 1X decided to bring the future to us today. Sorry, Elon, the future's here, and it's not yours to deliver.

What does the future look like, you ask? Well, it's called EVE (sorry, WALL-E isn't included). EVE is a humanoid robot that's been active since April this year and has made the big leap from the lab to the real world. And what’s it doing, you wonder? Just hanging out at two industrial locations, doing a bang-up job as a security guard. Yes, we're talking an actual robocop. It’s got a head, a face, two moving arms, and a superiority complex over the egg-shaped K5 security robots and two-wheeled contraptions that have been rolling around to date.

Bernt Bornich, the brain behind EVE, is all about practicality. Unlike past robots, that were gimmicks at best, EVE has been designed with a purpose in mind - a fancy-looking, real-world problem solver. She’s more than just a pretty face on wheels. In the event of an issue, our human security buddies can virtually jump into EVE's shoes (or rather, wheels?) to handle the situation. If Bornich’s vision is to be believed, the days of labor shortages are numbered, all thanks to our robotic brethren.

The company's already working on the next big thing, NEO, a robot that walks like a human. There are currently 1.1 million humans employed as security guards in the US, but the way Bornich is going, we could be seeing a sizable robot population stepping into the mix soon. EVE and NEO are not just going to be laborers, but companions, supporting individuals in various capacities. Generative AI plays a big part in creating these humanoids, giving them the ability to understand and execute tasks in a way that's just "pretty magical." The future’s looking more robotic than ever, folks. And while we wait for Elon Musk's response, it seems like EVE and her future siblings are ready to step out of the lab and into our world.

Adobe Firefly Launches Public Beta

Creatives around the world can rejoice now that Adobe has officially released their generative AI tool called Firefly. I’ve been waiting to test this tool out and share about how I am using it. The image at the top is just one cool feature inside of firefly that I was able to create in seconds. There are so many unique features that will make creative work so much more accessible that I can’t even begin to go through it all here. If you want to check it out yourself, CLICK HERE

📰 News From The Front Lines: 📰

đź“š RESEARCH đź“š

Scientists have developed a cool new system called MinD-Video that can create high-quality videos from brain activity. Imagine being able to watch a movie of your thoughts! This is done by using a special type of brain scan called an fMRI, which captures the activity in our brains when we think or see things.

The MinD-Video system is really good at its job. It can make videos at any speed and the videos it makes are very close to the original thoughts or sights. In fact, it's 45% better than the previous best system. Plus, the way it works is similar to how our brains naturally process information. This exciting development could help us better understand how our brains work and could even lead to new ways of interacting with computers using our thoughts!
