AI Pioneer Geoffrey Hinton Steps Down, Warns of Potential Dangers

Midjourney Prompt: Geoffry Hinton as the Godfather Style: The Godfather, black and white, photorealistic โ€”v 5

Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the godfather of artificial intelligence (AI), has resigned from Google, citing concerns over the increasing risks associated with advancements in AI technology. The 75-year-old British-Canadian cognitive psychologist and computer scientist has been a key figure in developing neural networks and deep learning, which have laid the groundwork for AI systems such as ChatGPT.

Hinton's primary concern revolves around AI chatbots becoming more intelligent than humans in the near future, which he finds "quite scary." He emphasizes that while chatbots may currently have more general knowledge than humans, their reasoning abilities are still lagging. However, given the rapid pace of progress in the field, Hinton stresses the need for vigilance.

The potential misuse of AI by "bad actors" for nefarious purposes is another concern raised by Hinton. He outlines a nightmare scenario where a malevolent individual, like Russian President Vladimir Putin, might enable robots to create their own sub-goals, ultimately leading them to seek more power.

Hinton is not alone in his apprehension about the future of AI. Matt Clifford, the chairman of the UK's Advanced Research and Invention Agency, emphasizes the importance of investing heavily and urgently in AI safety and control as AI capabilities continue to accelerate.

While Hinton acknowledges the short-term benefits of AI, he believes that the responsibility of ensuring safe AI development lies with governments. He commends Google for their responsible approach and remains committed to a responsible development of AI.

The rapid development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) has caught even its creators by surprise. AI chatbots are just one aspect of artificial intelligence, which also encompasses algorithms for video-streaming platforms, recruitment filters, insurance premium calculations, and medical diagnoses. However, the pace of AI acceleration raises concerns that one day, AI systems may start building their own paths without human intervention.

IBM Shifts Hiring Strategy in Response to Growing AI Infuence

IBM's CEO, Arvind Krishna, has revealed plans to halt hiring for positions that may be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI) within the next few years. In an interview, Krishna stated that back-office roles, such as human resources, could see up to 30% being replaced by AI and automation over the next five years. This change would result in around 7,800 job losses, with part of the reduction occurring through natural attrition, according to an IBM spokesperson.

Despite the hiring freeze in certain areas, IBM, which currently employs around 260,000 workers, continues to recruit for software development and customer-facing roles. Krishna noted that finding talent is now easier compared to a year ago. IBM has also announced job cuts this year, which could affect roughly 5,000 workers. Nonetheless, the company has increased its overall workforce, hiring approximately 7,000 people in the first quarter.

Mind-Boggling Breakthrough: AI Translates Your Thoughts into Text!

A groundbreaking AI-based decoder has been developed to translate brain activity into continuous text, allowing non-invasive mind-reading for the first time. The system can reconstruct speech with remarkable accuracy while participants listen to a story or even silently imagine one, using only fMRI scan data. This significant advance could open up new possibilities for restoring speech in patients struggling to communicate due to stroke or motor neuron disease.

The decoder overcomes the inherent time lag in fMRI scans by utilizing large language models like those underpinning OpenAI's ChatGPT. These models numerically represent the semantic meaning of speech, enabling scientists to associate neuronal activity patterns with strings of words conveying specific meanings. The decoder, trained on brain activity data from volunteers listening to podcasts, generates text that closely matches the intended meanings of the original words, even when the participants silently imagine a story or watch silent videos.

This achievement in non-invasive brain activity decoding is a major leap forward compared to previous efforts that focused on single words or short sentences. Future research will assess whether this technique can be applied to other brain-imaging systems, potentially expanding its practical applications and benefits.

Neurosymbolic AI blends two different ways of thinking โ€“ brain-like networks and rules-based methods โ€“ to make smarter and more advanced AI systems. These systems can help make better choices in areas like healthcare and law, while also making it easier to understand and safer to use in things like self-driving cars.
