President Biden announced last week that the likes of Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, along with AI creators OpenAI and startups Anthropic and Inflection, are promising to do some housekeeping on their AI products before letting them loose. This means third-party oversight, security testing, and precautions against biosecurity and cybersecurity risks.

But let's not break out the champagne just yet. The plan's a bit hazy on who's responsible for keeping these companies in check. Plus, they've committed to ensuring their AI doesn't gain too much independence—like that time your Roomba decided to redecorate your living room. They're also promising to use digital watermarks to separate AI-generated content from the real deal.

Critics argue these voluntary commitments are more like New Year's resolutions—well-intentioned but often short-lived. They're calling for public discussions and more comprehensive regulations. The companies have agreed to red-team tests, essentially letting external experts try to expose weaknesses in their AI systems. It's not an easy promise, but it's a start.

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is prepping to introduce legislation to regulate AI, sparking concerns that smaller players could be left out. The game of tech innovation is starting to look a lot like a VIP club, where only the deep-pocketed companies get the good seats. Worldcoin wants to single-handedly "distinguish humans from AI online," usher in "global democratic processes," and, hold on to your hats folks, "drastically increase economic opportunity." Sounds ambitious? Absolutely. But the really wild part? They've managed to scoop up a cool $250 million in funding from big guns like Andreessen Horowitz, Khosla Ventures, and Reid Hoffman.

Now, onto the really juicy bit. Worldcoin plans to get its currency into the hands of every human with a smartphone. Their method? A somewhat sci-fi sounding 'Orb' - a helmet-shaped device that scans your eyeball to verify your humanity. Yep, you heard right, we've hit peak crypto meets biometrics. This is where you download their World App, stare into the Orb, and voila! You've got your World ID.

Skeptical? You’re not alone. In fact, it's been called one of the most audacious attempts to "bribe" the world to embrace crypto. And it hasn't all been roses and sunshine. The project has taken some heat for allegedly exploitative practices in less affluent countries.

Despite the bumps on the road, they’ve managed to onboard over 2 million folks across 30 countries since May 2021.

But what can Worldcoin do for you, apart from serving a dose of cyberpunk reality? According to their website, it has the potential to beef up incentive strategies like loyalty programs by combating fraud, outsmarting bots with identity confirmation, and even facilitating globally democratic governance.
