I'm super excited to see what people will build using these tools and advancements. Sam Altman even mentioned that there will be many new programs built using this technology that even he can't predict what all it can and will be used for. GPT-4 is Here, and it's Multimodal: Here's What That Means.
According to Andreas Braun, the Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft Germany, GPT-4, the latest version of the company's large language model, will be released in the first week of March 2023. Braun also confirmed that GPT-4 will be a multimodal AI, meaning that it will have the ability to operate across different types of input such as text, speech, images, and video.
The key takeaway from this announcement is that GPT-4 will be a multimodal large language model, which is a significant improvement over its predecessors, GPT-3 and GPT-3.5, which only operated in one modality, text. The German news report suggested that GPT-4 could operate in at least four modalities, including images, sound, text, and video.
Dr. Andreas Braun stated that GPT-4 would introduce multimodal models that offer different possibilities, such as videos. However, the reporting lacked specific information on GPT-4, making it unclear whether the multimodality referenced was specific to GPT-4 or general.
Microsoft's Director of Business Strategy, Holger Kenn, explained that multimodal AI refers to the ability to translate text into not only images but also music and video. This statement supports the idea that GPT-4 will be a multimodal language model that can operate across different modalities.
In addition to improving its AI's functionality, Microsoft is also working on "confidence metrics" to ground its AI with factual data, making it more reliable.
Generative AI integration: A Wave of Change for Tech Companies
Salesforce has launched a new product that integrates generative AI into their software to help salespeople, customer service workers, developers, and others remove mundane tasks from their workday. According to Salesforce Service Cloud CEO Clara Shih, one job burden in particular that is being removed is writing “dreaded” sales emails.
Generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT are changing the way companies and salespeople communicate with customers for the better. Shih states that most salespeople dread writing sales emails and would rather be engaging with customers and problem-solving. By offloading these tasks, salespeople can focus on more important matters. Soon, our bots will just be talking to their bots. Maybe soon I can just get an end-of-the-day report with my dinner served by my robot chef.
Shih made a clear distinction between how generative AI can be utilized by the general public compared to business clients and enterprise users. Generative AI can be used to write sales emails and customer service responses that agents can send to customers faster. It can also be used to cold call and handle conversations.
Salesforce recently launched Einstein GPT, the first generative AI CRM technology. The updated software uses generative AI technology and OpenAI’s advanced AI models to do things like create personalized emails for salespeople, responses for customer service representatives, and auto-generate code for developers, among other tasks.
Since the launch of ChatGPT, many technology companies have looked to roll out their own generative AI-driven tool amid the surge in interest. Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Snap are just a few examples of companies that have integrated generative AI into their products and apps.
Salesforce has also launched a ChatGPT app for Slack that could help write messages and get conversation summaries. Salesforce Ventures, the company’s VC arm, has also launched its own $250 million generative AI fund.
According to Shih, the integration of AI tools into workers’ lives is critical. It can help optimize things for workers, making sure that their days aren't filled with mundane tasks. However, it is critical that companies ensure that employees aren’t using consumer-focused chatbots to ensure that their proprietary data doesn’t get out into the open.
