Hugging Face Launches Open-Source ChatGPT Clone for AI Community
From Open-Source ChatGPT Clones to AI's Unstoppable March into Creative Industries: A Look at Today's Top AI News and Research.
What's up ya'll, this is AIdeations. The go-to newsletter that takes AI and tech news that slaps and turns it into a no-bs, fun email for you each day.
I know most of you don't read this section, but if you do today you're in for a treat. Anyone who has or refers just two people to sign up for the newsletter will be invited to join me on a private Zoom call to discuss AI and how to apply it in your life, work, and business. I'll be scheduling the call sometime in May and will poll everyone on the best time and date. As usual, I have nothing to sell you on this call. You can find your referral code at the bottom of this email.
Here's what we've got in store for you today:

TL;DR: Hugging Face has launched HuggingChat, an open-source ChatGPT clone based on the Open Assistant Conversational AI Model. It was trained using the reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) training methodology and is available for use without registration. While it may not be as good as ChatGPT, it represents a significant step for the open-source community. The article also discusses AI's rapid advancement and its impact on the creative industries, as well as potential societal challenges from AI deployment without due consideration. Other news includes Apple's development of an AI-powered health coaching service, Palantir's AI platform for military decision-making, and scientists' efforts to teach computers how the brain sees things.
Hugging Face Launches HuggingChat: A Promising Open-Source ChatGPT Clone for the AI Community

A few months back I mentioned where I was learning and testing different models. That place is none other than HuggingFace. I also mentioned BLOOM, which has always been built open source and was going to compete with ChatGPT. Yesterday, they launched and while not as good as ChatGPT, it's an incredible accomplishment and a sign that major corporations won't be the only ones with access to these tools and resources.
Hugging Face, the machine learning community and AI tools platform, has announced the launch of HuggingChat, an open-source ChatGPT clone available for anyone to use or download.
Hugging Face is both a company and an AI community, offering free open-source tools for creating machine learning and AI applications. Among its recent projects is Bloom, a 176 billion parameter large language model accessible to anyone who adheres to their Responsible AI license. The platform provides open-source models in various categories, such as multimodal, vision, audio, natural language processing, and reinforcement learning. It also hosts datasets and libraries, facilitating team collaboration through a repository similar to GitHub. Services are available at free, pro, and enterprise levels.
HuggingChat is a ChatGPT clone based on the Open Assistant Conversational AI Model, a project of the non-profit Large-scale Artificial Intelligence Open Network (LAION). LAION is dedicated to making cutting-edge technology available as open source, believing that machine learning research and applications have the potential for significant positive impact on the world.
The Open Assistant Conversational AI Model aims to provide everyone access to a high-quality chat-based large language model, potentially revolutionizing innovation in language. HuggingChat was trained using the OpenAssistant Conversations Dataset (OASST1), a new dataset collected up until April 12, 2023. The model employs the reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) training methodology created by OpenAI, which is used to create high-quality, human-annotated, and quality-rated datasets for training AI.
However, the researchers acknowledge that the crowdsourcing approach used to create the dataset introduced limitations in its quality, such as cultural and subjective biases from the individuals involved. The dataset may not represent the diversity of viewpoints across all contributors.
Despite this, the researchers still stand behind the dataset, as it was created with strict quality guidelines. HuggingChat is currently available for use without registration, and while it may not be on par with ChatGPT, it represents a significant first step for the open-source community at no cost.

From Photos to Films: AI's Unstoppable March into Creative Industries
The rapid pace at which technology is advancing is truly astounding. In just one year, even professional photographers struggle to discern between real and artificial images, as AI-generated content wins photography and art competitions. AI-generated video is also gaining traction, with current results resembling the early stages of MidJourney.
In 2024, I predict that anyone with a script or an idea will be able to create full-length movies that appear as though they were produced by major studios. If the current rate of scaling persists, we might see a form of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) within the next 12 months. The world is transforming in unprecedented ways, and keeping up with the latest developments in AI research is proving to be a challenge, even for experts like myself. Staying informed requires constant attention to Twitter/Reddit threads, and research papers, as significant breakthroughs seem to occur almost daily.
It is crucial that we engage in a serious dialogue about the future we envision. While I recognize the immense potential benefits of continued AI deployment and research, I am also acutely aware of the severe repercussions that may arise from indiscriminate public use without due consideration of the consequences.
Many people may underestimate the profound societal challenges we face if we fail to coordinate our efforts effectively. Regardless of one's profession, this technology impacts everyone. Even if you believe that automation could never replace your job, it is essential to remember that our economy and social systems rely on people being employed.
Goldman Sachs estimates that 300 million jobs could be automated, and the World Economic Forum predicts that more than 50% of the workforce will need reskilling or retraining by 2025 โ a milestone that may arrive sooner than anticipated. AI is already displacing workers, and industries such as SaaS businesses, accounting, paralegal work, financial analysis, accountants, lawyers, software engineers, and many many more are no exception.
As we enter a world where "humans need not apply," we must reassess every aspect of our society to ensure that AI works to our advantage. While AI has the potential to help us solve significant problems, it can also create even more significant issues if we are not cautious. And let us not forget that a "Skynet" scenario, though unlikely, is not entirely off the table.

๐ RESEARCH: Seeing Beyond The Brain ๐
Scientists are trying to understand how the human brain sees things, so they can teach computers to do the same. They record the brain's activity while someone looks at pictures, and use that information to create their own pictures. But this is hard because the brain is complicated and they don't have a lot of information.
A new method called MinD-Vis helps with this. It uses a computer program to learn how the brain works by itself, and then it creates its own pictures based on what it learned. Even though they don't have a lot of information to work with, MinD-Vis is very good at making pictures that look like the real thing.
