ChatGPT Plugins: Is this the End for Google?

ChatGPT, an emerging product that has been gaining momentum at an unprecedented rate, has demonstrated that conversational interfaces are the primary application for Large Language Models (LLMs) in the realm of artificial intelligence. Although its success in distribution is indisputable, ChatGPT is facing some constraints due to its limited access to the internet.

To tackle this issue, OpenAI has launched plug-ins, which provide developers and users with the requisite resources to grant ChatGPT access to real-time data, services, and the internet in general. These plug-ins enable ChatGPT to execute a variety of tasks, such as browsing recent events, automating chores through Zapier, and even ordering groceries from Instacart. As time passes, it is predicted that many companies will join this sphere.

As more plug-ins are created, there are speculations regarding the fate of top-notch software applications and services. Will they eventually transform into API layers? The consequences of a few of these plug-ins could be monumental. If ChatGPT becomes the central nucleus of most daily digital interactions, it has the potential to displace Google as the internet's starting point for the majority of users.

Some users are already finding Google to be an outdated technology, expecting more from it than it currently provides. As plug-ins continue to progress and become more widely available, other applications and services may become obsolete. In this rapidly changing AI-driven world, it is vital for Google and other tech giants to adapt and innovate to remain relevant.

AI vs White-Collar Workers: Which Jobs Are Most at Risk?

A recent research paper published by a team of researchers from OpenAI and the University of Pennsylvania has found that individuals with bachelor’s, master’s, and professional degrees are more likely to be impacted by ChatGPT than those without these credentials.

The study revealed that jobs with the least exposure to AI require the most on-the-job training, while roles that do not require much training tend to have higher salaries, but are also more exposed to GPT. The research also discovered that approximately 80% of the US workforce may have at least 10% of their work tasks affected by GPT, while almost 19% of workers could see at least 50% of their duties influenced.

Simon Johnson, an economics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, stated that “These models have made a lot of progress in understanding human speech, both written and spoken and using pictures. They are able to potentially replace humans in tasks that are fairly intensive in communication—and a lot of communication tasks are done by people with some degree in education.”

However, it’s not all bad news for white-collar workers. Johnson noted that while AI may displace many of these roles, it could also create new opportunities. The key to success is being able to adapt, learn new skills quickly, and remain flexible.

Over the past few decades, the internet has created numerous new job opportunities, such as web design and marketing, while traditional roles such as data entry have decreased. Many of the new jobs have gone to younger individuals, those with education and a unique perspective.

AI has been gradually introduced into workplaces for years, from automating customer service in call centers to assisting with warehouse inventory and providing data analysis insights. Additionally, one reason why white-collar jobs could be the most affected is that AI can be applied to these roles at a relatively low cost compared to deploying a fleet of autonomous trucks, for instance.

In conclusion, while the impact of AI on jobs is a concern, there are opportunities for those who can adapt to the changes quickly.

📚 RESEARCH: First Contact With AGI 📚

The title of the paper has been changed to "Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence: Early experiments with GPT-4". Even though Microsoft has invested in GPT-4, the paper is still an interesting read. According to Microsoft, GPT-4's performance is very close to human-level, and in some cases, surpasses models like ChatGPT. Microsoft believes that GPT-4 could be seen as an early version of an artificial general intelligence (AGI) system, although it is still incomplete.

Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence: Early experiments with GPT-4

Artificial intelligence (AI) researchers have been developing and refining large language models (LLMs) that exhibit remarkable capabilities across a variety of domains and tasks, challenging our understanding of learning and cognition. The latest model developed by OpenAI, GPT-4, was trained using an unprecedented scale of compute and data. In this paper, we report on our investigation of an early version of GPT-4, when it was still in active development by OpenAI. We contend that (this early version of) GPT-4 is part of a new cohort of LLMs (along with ChatGPT and Google's PaLM for example) that exhibit more general intelligence than previous AI models. We discuss the rising capabilities and implications of these models. We demonstrate that, beyond its mastery of language, GPT-4 can solve novel and difficult tasks that span mathematics, coding, vision, medicine, law, psychology and more, without needing any special prompting. Moreover, in all of these tasks, GPT-4's performance is strikingly close to human-level performance, and often vastly surpasses prior models such as ChatGPT. Given the breadth and depth of GPT-4's capabilities, we believe that it could reasonably be viewed as an early (yet still incomplete) version of an artificial general intelligence (AGI) system. In our exploration of GPT-4, we put special emphasis on discovering its limitations, and we discuss the challenges ahead for advancing towards deeper and more comprehensive versions of AGI, including the possible need for pursuing a new paradigm that moves beyond next-word prediction. We conclude with reflections on societal influences of the recent technological leap and future research directions.
