Meta Unveils Breakthrough AI: Segment Anything Model Revolutionizes Object Identification

  • Meta has published the Segment Anything Model (SAM), an AI model capable of identifying individual objects within images and videos, even if it hasn't encountered them during training.

  • The largest dataset of image annotations accompanies SAM, according to the company.

  • SAM allows users to select objects by clicking on them or using text prompts, such as writing "cat" to identify cats in a photo.

  • The AI breakthroughs follow Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT, which sparked a wave of investments and competition among big tech companies.

  • Meta is working on incorporating generative AI "creative aids" into its apps, as stated by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

  • SAM technology is already used internally by Meta for photo tagging, content moderation, and content recommendation on Facebook and Instagram.

  • SAM model and dataset will be available for download under a non-commercial license, with users agreeing to use the accompanying prototype only for research purposes.

Meta releases AI model that can identify items within images

Facebook-owner Meta published an artificial intelligence model on Wednesday that can pick out individual objects from within an image, along with a dataset of image annotations that it said was the largest ever of its kind.
