How AI is Reshaping Business and Society

What's up ya'll, this is AIdeations. The go-to newsletter that takes AI and tech news that slaps and turns it into a no-bs, fun email for you each day.

Been traveling a lot lately and slacking. Don’t worry though, I’ve still got you covered and I’m still researching and taking notes every single day.

Today is packed, However, I want to improve delivering more consistently and keeping everyone up to date. It’s frustrating because a lot of the tools I am reporting on I still don’t have access to. I can’t wait to get my hands on ChatGPT plugins. Web Browser, Wolfram Alpha, Code Interpretor, ZillowGPT, etc. Instead, I am having to report what people who have gotten access have been building. Still great but man I want to get my hands on these tools!

Here's what we've got in store for you today:

TLDR: OpenAI's ChatGPT Code Interpreter plugin unlocks a wealth of possibilities for developers and users with its Python interpreter, handling tasks from basic video editing to analyzing Bitcoin datasets. IBM launches Watsonx to help businesses build and deploy AI models. Octopus Energy in the UK has fully embraced AI to handle customer email interactions, and Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger express caution about the potential misuse of powerful AI technology.

Impacting Businesses and Individuals: The Revolutionary ChatGPT Code Interpreter Plugin

The Code Interpreter plugin has proven its versatility across a myriad of applications. For instance, it can handle tasks like basic video editing, converting GIFs into MP4 videos, and creating visualized maps from location data. It even shows proficiency in more complex tasks such as analyzing Bitcoin datasets, extracting color palettes from images, and creating animated GIFs from scratch. These capabilities have significant implications for a wide range of industries, including digital marketing, data analysis, and content creation, empowering businesses to leverage AI for efficient and innovative solutions.

Users are also benefitting from this technological advancement on a personal level. The ability to analyze a user's music taste from their Spotify playlist or render animated GIFs within seconds opens up new and engaging ways for individuals to interact with AI technology. As developers continue to explore the plugin's capabilities, it's likely we'll see even more innovative applications in the future. Despite OpenAI not having announced a wider rollout date for ChatGPT plugins, anticipation is high for what's to come.

Here’s 10 of the coolest things I’ve seen so far:

IBM Rolls Out Watsonx: An All-In-One AI Platform for Enterprises

IBM has made a substantial bet on AI with its recent launch of IBM Watsonx at its annual Think conference. The new platform aims to provide businesses with the necessary tools to build, adapt, and deploy AI models while addressing transparency, trust, and privacy issues that have been identified as significant barriers to AI adoption. Watsonx stands out from competitors like Amazon's SageMaker Studio, Google's Vertex AI, and Microsoft's Azure AI Platform by offering a range of pre-trained, enterprise-ready models and a "cost-effective infrastructure."

Watsonx is being marketed as a one-stop shop for AI, with features including Watsonx.data, a specialized data store for governed data and AI workloads, and Watsonx.governance, a toolkit to help organizations meet ethical standards, protect customer privacy, and detect model bias. IBM also showcased a new GPU offering optimized for AI workloads and the IBM Cloud Carbon Calculator, a tool for measuring and managing carbon emissions.

Although competition in the AI space is fierce, and despite some past missteps, IBM continues to show confidence in the potential of AI, even predicting that AI could contribute $16 trillion to the global economy by 2030. It remains to be seen whether IBM's bold vision will translate into a significant impact.

AI Taking the Wheel at Octopus Energy

In a bold move into the future, Octopus Energy, a UK-based energy supplier, has fully embraced artificial intelligence (AI), claiming that it's now doing the job of 250 human employees. CEO Greg Jackson revealed in a piece for The Times of London that AI has been handling a significant portion of customer email interactions since February. Currently, AI replies to more than a third of customer emails, a task that would ordinarily require a workforce of about 250 people.

What's more, it appears that customers are quite pleased with their AI correspondents. Jackson reports that AI-generated emails have achieved an 80% customer satisfaction rate, outpacing the 65% satisfaction achieved by human counterparts. However, the firm isn't cutting out the human touch completely; team members continue to supervise AI responses and add personalized touches as needed.

While Jackson reassures that this shift won't result in job losses at Octopus Energy, he does acknowledge the potential for "huge and rapid dislocation" in the job market due to the accelerating pace of AI technology. A recent report from Goldman Sachs seems to echo this sentiment, suggesting that AI tools, like OpenAI's ChatGPT, could disrupt up to 300 million full-time jobs worldwide, particularly in white-collar sectors such as legal services and administration. On the flip side, the same report also noted the potential for AI to spur global labor productivity and even generate new types of jobs.

Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger Express Caution on AI's Impact

At Berkshire Hathaway's annual meeting, legendary investors Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger discussed the implications of artificial intelligence (AI). Munger acknowledged the growth of robotics and AI in industries like manufacturing but expressed skepticism about some of the hype surrounding the technology. Buffett, while impressed by AI's capabilities, drew parallels between AI and the atomic bomb, emphasizing that while both are powerful inventions, their potential misuse could have serious consequences.

Buffett acknowledged that AI can achieve remarkable feats, citing Microsoft's ChatGPT technology as an example. However, he noted its limitations, such as its inability to tell jokes, and expressed concern about the implications of AI's growing capabilities. He likened AI's potential to the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II, raising questions about the long-term consequences of such powerful technology.

The investors' views on AI mirror the concerns of over 1,000 researchers and technologists, including Elon Musk, who recently called for a six-month halt on AI development due to the "profound risks" it poses to society and humanity. Despite the advancements and potential benefits of AI, the discussion highlighted the need for careful consideration and management of this powerful technology.
