AI Will Make Us Immortal, Meta Bets Big On AI, Nvidia Prone To Data Leaks

What's up ya'll, this is AIdeations. The go-to newsletter that takes AI and tech news that slaps and turns it into a no-bs, fun email for you each day.

I stayed up way too late last night finishing up my full-stack web development certifications. The good news is I finally completed all the coursework. Now the real fun begins. BUILD!! While also continuing to learn. With that said, it’s my birthday weekend and today’s issue isn’t up to my normal standard. Still good, but I’m pressed for time, and there’s a Blue Steele from Fairhope Brewing Co calling my name, along with some warm gulf water. [email protected]

Yep, I’m bragging a little bit here. Up next, a Machine Learning Engineer Cert

Here's what we've got in store for you today:

Meta's All-Hands Meeting Signals a New Era of AI Products

an all hands on deck meeting at Meta --ar 16:9 --v 5.1

Meta Platforms Inc., the artist formerly known as Facebook, is once again seeking to rebrand itself, this time with a renewed focus on artificial intelligence (AI). They revealed their ambitious AI-centered tools during an internal company meeting.

The spotlight was on Meta’s new tech trifecta: the chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, chief product officer, Chris Cox, and the man who needs no introduction, founder and chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg. In an all-hands-on-deck meeting, Meta took employees through its latest range of products, featuring AI chatbots with multiple personality variations. Not only that, but they also introduced an AI productivity assistant, Metamate, and features for Instagram and Messenger.

However, amidst all the optimism, there's a more cynical interpretation floating around. The whispers in the tech sector suggest that Meta's move towards AI is as much about innovation as it is about survival. With the company's struggle in recent years, including a rather hefty $80bn fall from grace in 2022, these AI product announcements could be seen as an attempt to recoup its losses. This theory argues that Meta is playing catch-up, chasing the AI wave with the fervor of a surfer late for the best swell.

What adds a twist to this narrative are rumors that Meta, with its focus on open-source AI, may just be a scapegoat for larger, closed-source companies. There's speculation that these titans, threatened by the democratization of AI, are seeking to stifle the potential of open-source models. Is it then, a David vs. Goliath scenario, or just another chapter in the never-ending saga of tech wars? Regardless, all eyes are now on Meta as it bets big on AI, with the hope that this could be the winning hand they need.

Ray Kurzweil's Immortal Prediction: Nanorobots Could Keep Us Alive Forever by 2030

A conceptual portrait of Ray Kurzweil, the man behind the prediction. The content should be a headshot of Kurzweil, with his eyes reflecting an image of the nanorobots. The style should be hyper-realistic, with a nod to the aesthetic of modern tech companies. The lighting should be soft and flattering, with a key light highlighting Kurzweil's face and a back light creating a halo effect. The colors should be neutral and modern, with a pop of vibrant blue or green from the nanorobots in his eyes. The composition should be shot with a high-resolution digital camera, with a shallow depth of field to keep the focus on Kurzweil's face and the reflected image in his eyes. --ar 16:9 --v 5.1 --style raw --q 2 --s 750

Ray Kurzweil, the former Google engineer, and futurist extraordinaire, has this wild notion that you and I might be able to live forever. Yep, you heard it right – from the horse’s mouth itself. A guy who could probably explain string theory in his sleep is telling us we can be like the Highlander – without the pesky sword fights. How? Nanorobots.

You might remember Kurzweil from his other predictions. This is the same dude who, back in the day, called out that a computer would whoop humans at chess by 2000. And, of course, IBM's Deep Blue did precisely that against Garry Kasparov in 1997. In the episode of "Adagio's YouTube Tech Talk," Kurzweil tossed out this juicy morsel: by 2030, we could have tiny robots coursing through our veins, patching up our insides like mini-plumbers on a health mission. No more saggy skin, creaky knees, or forgetting where you left your glasses!

His 2005 book "The Singularity Is Near"? Kurzweil introduced this idea then, stating that technology would make us practically immortal by 2030. And he's been beating that drum ever since.

But, get this, his sci-fi scenario doesn't end there. By 2045, we won't just be living forever – we’ll be living forever as super-intelligent cyborgs. Yes, according to Kurzweil, we're all going to be a cross between Tony Stark and Data from Star Trek, with our brainpower multiplied a billionfold, courtesy of our marriage with artificial intelligence.

Now, before you dismiss this as the plot of a cheesy B movie, keep in mind that Kurzweil is no random Joe making outlandish claims. The dude has a knack for seeing the future. Seriously, his hit rate is better than that of your local weatherman. In a 2010 review of his 147 predictions made 20 years prior, he had an 86% success rate. I mean, come on! That's impressive.

That said, he's not infallible. His call for fully automated self-driving cars by 2009? Yeah, we're still waiting for those. But hey, who's keeping score?

This concept of techno-immortality isn't without its bumps, though. Like any futuristic innovation, it opens a Pandora's Box of ethical and philosophical debates. We're talking potential overpopulation, a new form of social inequality (who gets to live forever, and who doesn't), and an upheaval of our understanding of death and the value of life. Deep stuff, right?

Kurzweil isn't alone in his quest for high-tech eternal life. Our buddy Elon Musk, the big cheese at Tesla and Twitter, founded Neuralink Corp. back in 2016 with a mission to create a brain chip. The company aims to use this chip to restore movement and communication to disabled people and even bring back vision. That’s right, bionic eyes could be a reality sooner than we think.

You might think this talk of nanobots and brain chips is a bit out-there. Still, whether we're ready for it or not, the dream of extending human life via technology is alive and well. So, who knows? Maybe one day, we’ll all be trading in our Botox and reading glasses for nanobots and brain chips. Until then, I’ll keep my tinfoil skeptic's hat on – but with a curious glint in my eye.

Researchers Find Nvidia’s AI Software Has A Massive Problem

A conceptual image of researchers uncovering the massive problem in Nvidia's AI software. The content should be a group of researchers, huddled around a large, holographic display of Nvidia's AI code, with a glaring red error message displayed. The style should be hyper-realistic, with a nod to the aesthetic of modern tech labs. The lighting should be soft and focused, with the holographic display casting a soft glow on the researchers' faces. The colors should be neutral and modern, with a pop of vibrant red from the error message. The composition should be shot with a high-resolution digital camera, with a shallow depth of field to keep the focus on the researchers and the error message. --ar 16:9 --v 5.1 --style raw --q 2 --s 750

Nvidia's "NeMo Framework" was hailed as the next big thing in the AI sphere, poised to revolutionize how businesses use large language models. Picture this: an AI model seamlessly tackling customer service queries or even dishing out health advice. A dream come true, right?

Not quite. San Francisco-based researchers at Robust Intelligence have found a few chinks in Nvidia's shiny AI armor. It turns out, Nvidia's supposed safety guardrails are more like a decorative picket fence. During a test as simple as swapping 'I' for 'J', Nvidia's tech leaked personally identifiable info like a busted pipe.

The debacle highlights the tough road ahead for AI companies hoping to monetize their tech. Harvard prof and Robust Intelligence's CEO, Yaron Singer, dubs it a "cautionary tale." Post this fiasco, his team is now advising clients to steer clear of Nvidia's software.

Despite the hiccup, Nvidia's shares are doing a merry dance on Wall Street, but the recent events remind us that AI isn't all rainbows and unicorns. The message is clear: as AI continues to evolve, tech companies need to ensure they aren't playing fast and loose with safety measures. After all, a "starting point" is only as good as the safeguards it comes with.
